Drum motor comparison

Can’t decide between a drum motor and an external drive for your conveyor application? This guide compares both, including a checklist.

Drum Motor vs External Drive: A Practical Selection Guide

Choosing the right conveyor drive is a crucial engineering decision with many consequences. There are essentially only two types of drives available to conveyor designers and machinery builders: the drum motor, where all components are integrated into one drive package, and the external drive, where the motor and gearbox are installed separately from the conveyor.

This guide explains what the difference is and compares the two drives on criteria like footprint, protection, hygiene, maintenance load, efficiency, installation complexity, and total cost of ownership. It also defines conditions when each drive type will be the better choice.

What Is a Drum Motor?

A drum motor is a self-contained electromechanical drive. Both the electric motor and the gearbox are enclosed inside the drum itself. It doesn’t have any external rotating components. No motor mounted to the side of the conveyor. No coupling or chain connecting the gearbox output to the drive drum.

The LAT drum motors provided by BEGE are made in Germany by Himmel Technologies GmbH. The product range includes 15 drum diameters ranging from 61.5 mm to 800 mm, power ratings from 0.03 kW to 132 kW, and maximum torque of 22,527 Nm. There are two models of LAT drum motors: TM series for normal applications, and TMRVS series in stainless steel for food production facilities.

Stocked by BEGE in the Netherlands, all LAT drum motors are quickly deliverable worldwide.

What’s the alternative?

An external drive for conveyor applications is a combination of a motor mounted outside the conveyor frame and a gear box connected to the drive drum. Usually, the connection is made using a coupling or chains. All external drive components are easily accessed for servicing purposes.

At BEGE, we offer several external drive system configurations for conveyor belts, rollers, and transport equipment:

When to Choose a Drum Motor for Your Conveyor or Packaging Line

When considering the use of a drum motor in a conveyor drive system, one of the following reasons could be the decisive factor.

Space limitations exist alongside the conveyor

Drum motor space limits 600px

The presence of narrow frame or low clearance conditions means that it’s not possible to integrate an external motor in the conveyor layout without extending the machine footprint. A drum motor will allow to keep the conveyor within its standard dimensions because it doesn’t need additional floor area outside the belt width. Dynamic conveyor layouts like pallet and carton flow systems can benefit from extra space provided by a drum motor installation.

Strict hygiene requirements are imposed

Drum motor strict hygiene

In food processing, pharmaceutical production and other industries with washing procedures performed after each day of operation, the external surface of a regular external drive can get contaminated due to inaccessible fastening bolts, cooling fins and other elements. If a conveyor is installed in such an environment, the IP69K protection of a drum motor is the best option to go. For an overview of drive systems for sustainable food production, the enclosed drum motor architecture provides a structural hygiene advantage over any external configuration.

Impact or collision hazards are present

Drum motor minimal maintenance

The use of forklifts or falling objects represents a threat to the operation of a conventional external motor and gearbox drive. In a cement plant, for instance, or a recycling facilities where bulky cargo is often handled, a drum motor would perform better because of no external moving parts susceptible to any impact or collision damage.

Continuous operation, minimal maintenance access

Drum motor collision impact

Conveyor applications at airport baggage handling, logistic sorting or continuous food production facilities have to run without interruption throughout the day and night. Oil-cooled construction of the drum motor eliminates the need for belt adjustments, coupling servicing or external bearing grease supply. Visual inspection of the shaft seals and the control cable is the only necessary maintenance. This reduces planned downtime and prevents unplanned stops due to lubrication problems or chain wear.

When the Drum Motor Is the Optimal Drive System

When a Conventional External Drive Is the Right Choice

A drum motor is not in every scenario the best choice. The following conditions favor a conventional external drive.

Externe aandrijving
  • Initial acquisition cost is the primary constraint
A drum motor carries a higher unit price than a comparable external gear motor. Where hygiene, maintenance, and protection requirements are low, and where initial spend must be minimized, an external drive may be the more appropriate economic choice. Total cost of ownership over a full operational lifecycle typically favors the drum motor, but the initial cost differential is real.

  • Torque requirements exceed the drum motor range
The LAT TM series covers applications up to 22,527 Nm. Heavy bulk conveyors in mining, large industrial dryers, and similar extreme low-speed, high-load applications may require external drive configurations beyond this range. Bevel and helical gear motor combinations can be selected to meet these requirements.

  • On-site component-level serviceability is a firm requirement
Some operations require technicians to replace the motor or gearbox independently, without removing the full drive unit from the conveyor. An external drive configuration allows this. When a drum motor fails, the entire unit is exchanged. BEGE stocks standard drum motor units in Sassenheim to minimize exchange turnaround time, but the serviceability model is fundamentally different.

  • The conveyor has multiple drive points along its length
Long belt conveyors driven from several intermediate points are typically engineered with external drives sized and positioned individually at each drive station. The configuration flexibility of separate motors and gearboxes is an engineering advantage in these installations.

Airport baggage handling Drum motors run continuously in baggage conveyor systems at major airports worldwide. Since there is no interfering with the drive and disturbing it during operations, these conveyors are running smoothly without stops and breaks. Special cladding of the LAT drum motors can be used to match belt grip, while integrated braking can provide additional security when working on inclinations. Fish and seafood processing Conveyor belts in fish processing factories are regularly subjected to intensive washing procedures that include using aggressive chemicals and high-pressure water. In this case, a drum motor with a stainless steel surface (IP69K protection) will provide efficient performance. Using variable frequency drives, the belt speed can be set according to the product flow. Mineral and stone transfer systems Such installations, for instance, at quarries and mines, require robust drive solutions that are capable of operating with minimal interference and are protected from impacts. Since a drum motor doesn't have any external parts to be struck, the solution is perfectly adequate. Special installations include emergency belt alignment, stop mechanisms and position sensors, controlled centrally from the HMI interface. Dynamic warehousing and sortation In e-commerce and logistics distribution centers, individual conveyor zone control is achieved with encoder-equipped drum motors. Zones start and stop independently, enabling accumulation conveyor operation and precise product sortation without the wiring complexity of multiple externally driven zones. Manure and waste conveyor systems These installations often feature steeply inclined conveyors where a drum motor with a built-in brake is required. The sealed construction of a drum motor tolerates the wet, corrosive environment. The compact integration fits within infrastructure where space around the conveyor is limited.
